Back to WataBox The science behind every refill

Water quality and technology

WataBox combines sediment filtration, activated carbon, reverse osmosis, ultraviolet treatment, and ozone technology in a multi-stage water purification process. Two dedicated finishing pathways give residents a choice between mineral-enhanced and alkaline drinking water.

Pure water. Two choices. One WataBox.

All water passes the same four purification stages. It then splits into two outlets. Each outlet has its own polishing filter, ultraviolet and ozone treatment, and its own finishing cartridge.

Incoming water supply

Shared purification

  1. Sediment filter (PP sediment filter)
  2. Granular activated carbon (UDF granular activated carbon)
  3. Carbon block (CTO carbon block)
  4. Reverse osmosis (Reverse osmosis (RO) membrane)

Then the water splits into two outlets

Mineral-enhanced outlet

  1. Polishing filter (T33 polishing filter)
  2. Ultraviolet (Ultraviolet (UV) treatment)
  3. Ozone (Ozone treatment)
  4. Mineral cartridge (Mineral cartridge)

Dispenses mineral-enhanced drinking water

Alkaline outlet

  1. Polishing filter (T33 polishing filter)
  2. Ultraviolet (Ultraviolet (UV) treatment)
  3. Ozone (Ozone treatment)
  4. Alkaline cartridge (Alkaline membrane / cartridge)

Dispenses alkaline drinking water

The diagram shows the order of treatment, not where each part sits inside the station.

Two choices from one purified supply

Mineral-Enhanced Water

Purified water finished through a dedicated mineral cartridge that reintroduces selected minerals for a balanced, refreshing taste.

T33 › UV › Ozone › Mineral cartridge

Alkaline Water

Purified water finished through a dedicated alkaline cartridge designed to raise the water’s pH.

T33 › UV › Ozone › Alkaline cartridge

Alkaline water is offered as a choice of taste and preference. We make no health claims for it.

Each stage, and why it matters

Open any stage to see what it does.

Shared purification, for both outlets

PP sediment filterShared stage

What it does

A polypropylene filter catches sand, rust and other particles carried in with the water supply.

Why it matters

Particles would clog the finer filters that follow, so stopping them first keeps every later stage working as it should.

UDF granular activated carbonShared stage

What it does

The water flows through loose granules of activated carbon, which take up chlorine and many of the compounds that affect taste and smell.

Why it matters

Taste is the first thing residents notice. Taking chlorine out early also protects the reverse-osmosis membrane further along.

CTO carbon blockShared stage

What it does

A second carbon stage, pressed into a dense block. CTO stands for chlorine, taste and odour.

Why it matters

The denser block catches what the loose granules let through, so the water reaches the membrane as clean as possible.

Reverse osmosis (RO) membraneShared stage

What it does

Water is pressed through a very fine membrane designed to hold back dissolved salts and very small particles. What it holds back is flushed to the drain.

Why it matters

This is the heart of the purification. Every refill, from either outlet, starts from this purified water. It is also why a station needs a drainage connection.

On each outlet, in this order

T33 polishing filterOne on each outlet

What it does

A small inline carbon filter gives the water a final polish just before it is finished.

Why it matters

It is the last touch for taste. Each outlet has its own, so the two finishes never share one.

Ultraviolet (UV) treatmentOne on each outlet

What it does

The water passes an ultraviolet lamp. UV light is widely used in water treatment to inactivate bacteria and other microorganisms.

Why it matters

It is a treatment step that adds nothing to the water: no chemicals, no taste.

Ozone treatmentOne on each outlet

What it does

Ozone, a reactive form of oxygen, is used as a further treatment step. It breaks back down into ordinary oxygen.

Why it matters

It works differently from UV, so the two together give the water a second, separate treatment before it is dispensed.

Finishing cartridges

Mineral cartridgeMineral-enhanced outlet

What it does

A dedicated cartridge reintroduces selected minerals to the purified water.

Why it matters

Reverse osmosis takes minerals out along with everything else. This puts selected ones back, for a balanced, refreshing taste.

Alkaline membrane / cartridgeAlkaline outlet

What it does

A dedicated alkaline membrane or cartridge, designed to raise the water’s pH.

Why it matters

It gives residents who prefer alkaline water that choice from the same purified supply. It is offered as a preference, not as a health treatment.
